Black Student Union and Student Engagement present “Risking Everything” A Freedom Summer Exhibit

February 1, 2023 to February 9, 2023

Avanté Concourse

This traveling exhibit features a series moving images of “Freedom Summer” in 1964 when a group of college students and volunteers from the North, along with black Mississippians, risked their lives to overturn racist institutions by attempting to integrate Mississippi's segregated political system. These Civil Rights activists were met by extraordinary violence, including bombings, kidnapping, torture and murder. Much of this was covered on national television and focused the country's attention on civil rights issues for the first time, spurring public outrage and leading to the U.S. Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Main campus building hours:

Monday to Thursday: 6:30am to 10pm

Friday: 6:30am to 4:30pm

Saturday: 8am to 3:30pm

Sunday: Closed
