Tryg Thoreson, Harper College retired English and Humanities professor, will present on the lives and legacies of iconic Chicago architects Daniel (“Make no little plans”) Burnham and Louis (“Form follows function”) Sullivan. Professor Thoreson’s book—scheduled for publication in fall 2025 by the University of Illinois Press — is titled Uncle Dan, Beloved Master: Personal Histories of Daniel Burnham and Louis Sullivan, and highlights stories from the architects’ formative years in addition to the signature achievements of the 1890s and early 1900s. Presented by Harper College Authors Series of the The Cultural Arts Committee

Among the little-known, sometimes neglected topics Professor Thoreson will cover:

• Louis Sullivan’s Transcendental connections

• Daniel Burnham: injecting spirituality into commercial buildings

• "Uncle Dan” and Louis as architect/athletes

• A non-architect’s suggestions for viewing the buildings of Burnham and Sullivan
